Midland HH54VP2 receiving WZ2561 in Cruz Bay, USVI. Waiting for the weekly EAS test.

Happy New Year everyone! It’s good to be back home after a lovely vacation in the US Virgin Islands (USVI) with ONLY minor sunburn! I missed a WEEK of EAS and weather related stuff, so let’s get right into it!

The State of Montana is testing its EAS system and WEA/NWR distribution methods for AMBER Alerts. On January 13, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST), the Montana DOJ will be sending a CAE coded alert over NOAA Weather Radio and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). This system test will increase public awareness, and will likely assist in who is monitoring and forwarding the EAS message (in other words, find out who is capable of CAE sending).

For more information, see DA 22-1359

No new NWS Service Change Notices or Public Information Statements of note this update

Noticed a “Critical Weather Day” notice in some of the notices mentioned last journal entry? Check out this cool page I came across earlier! (and of course a link on that page goes to a 404 lol)

Due to the lack of streamers and RMT relaying in the USVI, I’ve decided to monitor a bunch of USVI streams I have encountered over a bunch of researching and searching. At the end of the month, or the next RMT received (whichever comes first), I will update this page.

USVI Updates!

  • Received NWR station WZ2561! This station is wireless and broadcasts its information in BOTH English and Spanish
  • The WZ2561 RWT message is simply the Puerto Rico message but coded for all of the Virgin Islands (078000)
  • WTJX FM is the FIRST station recorded in the USVI to have HD radio (and an HD2!) – It’s common for stations in the NPR and Public type market to have some sort of HD radio
